How Georgia Baseball Became the Story of the Summer

There’s something about “magical teams” that seemingly captivate the attention of society at large. Closer to home, there are certain Georgia teams that transcend their sport.

For me growing up the 1980 football team was Georgia Fan folklore. The 2021 and 2022 football teams healed a generation of heartbreak and reminded the college football world what the “G” on the helmet means. When Georgia Basketball won the SEC Championship in 2008 it was a major triumph. From media irrelevancy to the promise land of confetti and championship hardware being handed off. Solo heroics such as the Anthony Edwards year that resulted in a number one pick in the NBA draft or similarly the 2024 Charlie Condon-led baseball team that made the nation stop and watch live in the memory of Georgia fans that otherwise hardly ever think beyond the pigskin moving between the hedges.

Bandwagons be damned I think we are “all in” on this Georgia squad.

The 2026 Georgia Baseball team has become something different.

They have become a movement. Sour Power, “feeding the trees”, and the electric play of our Diamond Dawgs have all shined in the national spotlight.

For the first time in nearly four decades, Georgia Baseball has captured the attention of casual fans, football only fans, and an entire state that suddenly finds itself checking pitch counts, watching late night innings, and screaming at a television in June, a steple of the captivating environment that encompasses Omaha.

Even if Dave Portnoy doesn’t want to hear it..

This team has something you just can’t manufacture!

They are elite. They are connected. Their talent is ridiculous. & even someone like myself who has admittedly said the phrase “baseball is boring” countless times .. cannot wait to witness the electric energy surround this special magical run we are currently on.

And even though the road to Omaha has been marked with challenge, these DAWGS are having more FUN than anyone in the country. Except maybe all of us Georgia Fans of course!

The Most Dangerous Offense in America

The numbers almost don’t look real.

Georgia entered Omaha with 51 wins, an SEC regular season championship, an SEC Tournament championship, and one of the most terrifying offenses college baseball has seen in years. They have hit baseballs at a historic pace and turned a simple phrase into a program identity:

Feed. The. Trees.

Foley Field has never been less safe for squirrels.

The trees around Foley Field have been receiving a steady diet of baseballs all spring.

At the center of that destruction is Daniel Jackson, a player who somehow took the torch from Charlie Condon and carried it even further. The SEC Triple Crown winner, SEC Player of the Year, and Dick Howser Trophy winner has become the face of college baseball. Jackson even embraced his own spirit animal, the rhino, representing his strength, toughness, and no fear style of play. The “Rhino” has become another piece of Georgia baseball lore.

But this offense was never just one man.

Tre Phelps. Rylan Lujo. Kolby Branch. Ryan Wynn. A lineup where the ninth batter feels capable of ruining a pitcher’s evening. & even supporting role players like Michael Oshaugnesy have been nothing but clutch when it mattered most down the stretch.

After the last three games Georgia has amassed over 30 runs.

Georgia’s offense is built on analytics and launch angles, sure.

More than anything though, It’s built on joy. Us fans get to have a ton of fun on what has truly been an electric unforgettable ride.

Sour Power, Brotherhood, and Why This Team Feels Different

Most championship teams have a rally cry.

Some have chains.

Some have hats.

Georgia has a Buc-ee’s candy addiction.

The now famous Sour Power belts have become a symbol of this team. I think if Buccee’s doesn’t make a major NIL push for the program they’re dropping the ball. What started as a random Buc-ee’s stop became a tradition, then a dugout ritual, and eventually a fan movement that followed the Dawgs all the way to Omaha. Players estimate they’ve gone through dozens of bags during the run. Somewhere a dentist is in terror of the dental ramifications. lol.

That’s the magic of this group.

They can beat you 11-1 in the SEC Championship game.

They can erase a six-run deficit against Florida.

They can come back from seven runs down in a Super Regional game that instantly became part of Georgia baseball history.

Against Mississippi State, the Dawgs trailed 7-0 before unleashing one of the most unbelievable comebacks the sport has seen, eventually winning 13-12 in a game with 11 home runs. A day later, Daniel Jackson delivered again as Georgia completed the Super Regional sweep and punched its ticket to Omaha.

This team doesn’t panic.

They believe the next swing changes everything.

Usually, they’re right.

The Wes Johnson Transformation

When Wes Johnson arrived in Athens, there was excitement.

There was also skepticism. Could a former MLB pitching coach build a complete college powerhouse? Three seasons later, the answer is obvious. Absolutely.

Johnson has evolved from the guy known for developing pitchers into the architect of the most complete baseball culture Georgia has seen in a generation.

He built a program that embraces modern baseball while still playing with an old-school edge.

The result?

SEC Coach of the Year. SEC regular season champions.

SEC Tournament champions. A College World Series team.

And perhaps most importantly, a team that genuinely loves showing up to the ballpark every day.

Omaha: The Next Challenge Is Oklahoma

Now comes Oklahoma.

Do not be fooled by the regular-season record.

The Sooners are the definition of a dangerous postseason team.

They entered Omaha after knocking off national seed Georgia Tech, dominating Kansas in the Super Regional, and then shocking Alabama 9-0 in their College World Series opener. They are playing with the confidence of a team that has nothing left to lose.

Their formula is simple:

  • Freshman arms like Cord Rager and Xander Mercurius have been fearless.

  • Their bullpen has found another level.

  • Their offense has suddenly discovered serious power.

Georgia, however, remains the more explosive team on paper. The Bulldogs entered the matchup with a staggering 181 home runs and 660 runs scored compared to Oklahoma’s 89 home runs and 442 runs.

The question is not whether Oklahoma can compete. They absolutely can. The question is whether anyone can survive a Georgia lineup that believes every baseball was put on Earth for one purpose:

To feed the trees!!!

A Summer Georgia Fans Will Never Forget

Years from now, Georgia fans will remember where they were for the football championships.

They will remember Charlie Condon’s legendary season.

They’ll remember how a Star was born in Anthony Edwards.

How Josh Brooks has helped lead a resurgence of sports like Track, Tennis, Golf, Basketball, Gymnastics..

And now, they will remember the summer of Sour Power.

The summer of the Rhino. Of the 15k strike out night by Joey Volchko!

The summer where Wes Johnson’s vision became reality.

The summer where a baseball team with ridiculous power, unbelievable chemistry, and absolutely zero fear turned Omaha into the next stop on a journey that has already become one of the greatest stories in Georgia athletics. Even though we’re in Omaha and not at the familiar Foley Field, the trees are still hungry.

And the Dawgs are not done feeding them!!!

Go DAWGS !
