I Am The Storm: Georgia vs Alabama Preview

by Chito Chibuye

Dawgs OTL Writer/ UGA Alumnus

Death, Taxes, and UGA vs Bama. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Texas and LSU dominated the offseason story lines for acquired players and reality-tv worthy drama, but Georgia and Alabama still look to be on a crash course for the SECCG. A win or loss will not deter either team from achieving their goals, but PLEASE don’t tell the fans that because we are not hearing it. Throw in heightened security for the President's envoy and Tropical Storm Isaias in the gulf, this weekend is going to be a movie.

Georgia vs Alabama: Two Unbeaten SEC Powerhouses Collide

5-0 (3-0 SEC) Alabama & 5-0 (3-0 SEC) Georgia will battle in Tuscaloosa (as of this writing) in what is bound to be an electric game. While the narrative is no longer Saban vs Kirby, Kalen Debeor has brought his high-powered west coast offense to the SEC and has found an elite QB and talented WRs to help put up 49.6 ppg (2nd in FBS). Meanwhile Georgia is the least talked about top 3 team in the country because this is what they’re “supposed to do”. Georgia’s defense is impressive yet again, coming in at 7th in yds/allowed (244.6) and 12th in pts/g allowed (13.4), all the while Mike Bobo’s offense is the only offense better than Alabama’s at 51.4 ppg (1st in FBS).

Both teams are coming in red hot this Saturday. Alabama with its’ wins over @UK, FSU, USC, and @Miss St, while Georgia has taken out @Arkansas, OU, and Vandy. When these two teams meet it’s like warm and cold air clashing in the fall, and there’s bound to be a storm.

Players to Watch: Alabama's Biggest Threats Against Georgia

QB Keelon Russell: Alabama's Dual-Threat Heisman Candidate

After their impressive 56-23 win over the other Bulldogs in the SEC, Russell now enters Week 6 as a top Heisman candidate. So far this season, Russell has 1,414 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, and only two interceptions. The dual-threat QB is a homerun threat with his arms & legs and has given Kirby defenses problems over the years. He will occupy all of UGA’s attention on defense.

WR Ryan Coleman-Williams: Alabama's Explosive Playmaker

(376 yds & 4 TDs in 2026) He’s no longer 17 years old but the Junior WR is still a gamebreaker that UGA fans know all too well. He has not been as dominant as he was during his freshman campaign and UGA has since upgraded at the corner position.

LB Yhzonae Pierre: Alabama's Defensive Leader

The Senior linebacker may not be the most talented player on this defense but many in RTR circles consider him to be the most important. For this game, I’m going to agree because leadership and execution against this run game, containing Gunner, and covering these TE’s will be major to slowing down UGA.

EDGE Freshman Xavier “X” Griffin

Many in Tuscaloosa think “X” Griffin is the best first year player since Caleb Downs the notoriously great All-American that parted ways to lead Ohio State to a Natty.

He is their Chris Cole- not that he’s on that level but a major game breaker to say the least. The tight ends will be keen to bump and run as well as double team this guy looking to make his name a household one.

Georgia's Keys to Victory vs Alabama: Side Missions

Limit Explosive Plays and Contain Keelon Russell

UGA may score more points but Bama is more explosive in their pass game. Our defense needs to make them drive the length of the field to score points and tackle receivers after they catch the ball. We CANNOT have busts in the secondary. If we do, we'll have to abandon the run earlier than we want which will play to Bama’s advantage. Alabama’s run game doesn’t concern me but containing Keelon with the QB run is essential. He is lighting in a bottle and is faster than Gunner, so our rush lanes must be sound all night.

Establish the Run and Dominate the Line of Scrimmage

Inclement weather games tend to favor teams with good run games since the ball is harder to catch and throw when it’s wet. If the weather is even 50% of what’s being reported UGA has to be the more physical team and dominate the line of scrimmage. This version of Bama is not like the Saban teams. Our O-line, RBs, and TEs have the advantage and we need to exploit that. Running the ball keeps Keelon on the sideline and will wear them down in the 2nd half. It’s vital that we establish a lead early so we can pound the rock, and if we can continue to stop the run against Bama we can make them 1 dimensional in unfavorable conditions.

Win the Turnover Battle in Tuscaloosa

Both of these teams come into this game top 10 in turnover margin 6th for Alabama (+7) and 9th for Georgia (+6). Bama causes more TOs on defense but has also puts the ball on the ground offensively. UGA has caused less, but doesn’t turn the ball over. Weather will lead to ball security issues and could easily decide this game.

Georgia vs Alabama Weather Forecast: A Storm Is Coming

The weather is going to heavily affect how this game is played. Unfortunately for Alabama, I think this bodes well for Georgia’s offensive approach more. No longer does the black cloud of the Bama dynasty hang over our program. It reminds of that scene in Game of Thrones when Euron Greyjoy returns to the Iron Islands and tells Baelon “When men see my sails, they pray. You’re old, brother. You’ve had your time, now let another rule.” Baelon mocks him in his pride, “What kind of an Iron born loses his senses during a storm?” To which Euron replies, “I am the storm, brother…and you’re in my way” before tossing him off the bridge. There’s a storm heading straight for Tuscaloosa and only one team will survive the night. Go Dawgs!
